What I have inserted below is from Wayne Bryan. He is commenting on the absurd comment from Patrick McEnroe regarding how long he thinks it will take to get the USTA programs working. I only wish I had as much time as he requests for success. Private sector or anything else-heck marriage–you think your wife would give you 15-20 to get it right? Anyway, below is Patrick’s suggestion and Wayne’s response. You decide for yourself.
“Patrick McEnroe suggested that it would probably take 15 to 20 years to see what the new U.S.T.A. initiatives produce.”
“The statement below blew my mind too. You don’t get 15-20 years to produce in the private sector and the business world . . .
I repeat, get rid of USTA PD altogether. They have been going since 1987 and have spent well north of $250 Million and have yet to produce player one. They are the biggest obstacle to the growth and excellence of tennis in America . . . They are top down, authoritarian, arrogant and they think they are the key . . . one harmful and ill-conceived mandate after another – - – each one overturned by the next regime when it comes to power . . . and the lion’s share of the funds always goes to the coaches and administrators and not to the young players who might need the financial support . . .
Example One: Taylor Townsend was the first #1 in the world junior girl the US has had since something like 1983 and they tell her last August that they are not going to let her play the US Open Juniors because she was “out of shape”. Huh? Thank goodness there was a massive hue and cry in the press and across our tennis nation and they relented and let her play. By the way, where was ESPN during that controversy? Hmmm . . .
Again, tell the USTA PD to stay the hell outta the way and our juniors will do just fine. And I thought the well written article by Chris Lewis said it all beautifully . . .
Thanks for all you do for your players each day and hope you are having a wonderful Summer . . .0
