This week the Road Not Taken takes a look into the world of the NCAA Division II tennis. This is a NCAA Division that is full of athletes from all around the world. Our first team is the Columbus State University Cougars. And our second team to look at is the Abilene Christian University Wildcats.
Columbus State University is located in Columbus, GA. This is a school located smack dab in the middle of the most competitive tennis city in the whole world–Atlanta. But the team does not have a lot of players from the area…. The one American on the team is from Georgia and the rest are from all over the globe. Here is the roster for the Cougars. The Cougars are in the NCAA Top 20. The team is coached by Evan Isaacs and with the help of players from around the world he has turned the team into a national powerhouse among the DII schools.
Abilene Christian University is located in Abilene, TX. The roster for the Wildcats can be found at this link. The Wildcats are coached by Hutton Jones. Hutton played for the Wildcats and so did his son. 3 out of the 9 players listed on this roster are from other parts of the world but the rest are pure-Americana. Perhaps this is because the coach has been there a long time or perhaps it is thru his son’s play at the school that he is able to attract Americans to the school to play. I cannot be sure but the team is a perennial powerhouse among the DII schools competing in the NCAA.0
